In the latest episode of the “Daily Variety” podcast, Jennifer Maas from Variety delves into the roles directors David Fincher and Zach Cregger played in the development of Netflix’s innovative project “Unhinged.” This unique creation blends video gaming with television storytelling, using a smartphone as the controller.
“Unhinged” represents a significant advancement for Netflix as it expands its video game offerings. Produced by Night School, a game studio Netflix acquired in 2021, the game aims to engage players on large TV screens by merging the gaming experience with television series elements. Maas notes that “Unhinged” is designed to keep audiences captivated over extended periods.
According to Maas, Netflix has been primarily focused on mobile gaming. Recently, they introduced a FIFA World Cup game, marking their first major venture into TV gaming. This was followed closely by the release of “Unhinged,” which, although vastly different from a sports game, shares Netflix’s goal of allowing users to play on televisions or computers while using their phones as controllers. This approach eliminates the need for traditional gaming controllers and distinguishes it from typical mobile games.
Additionally, the phone’s capabilities are integrated into the gameplay.
Maas highlights the innovative use of smartphones in the game, where players can take simulated phone calls, view text messages, and navigate using their device. This design simplifies entry into the game, removing the complexities associated with traditional video gaming, and makes it accessible using just a smartphone.
Fincher, who played a pivotal role in Netflix’s original content strategy with “House of Cards” in 2013, and Cregger kept their contributions to “Unhinged” a secret until Maas revealed it. Their involvement is subtly acknowledged in the credits with a thank-you note. The game also features voice performances by well-known actors Zoë Kravitz and Sadie Sink.
