Is Philly prone to sinkholes?

While Philadelphia itself does not have carbonate rock formations within the city limits, nearby regions like King of Prussia exhibit such geology and are susceptible to sinkholes. Sinkholes in Philly are typically linked to pipe leaks and soil erosion, given the city’s extensive water network and aging infrastructure. Although sinkholes are relatively common in the region, other areas like Florida, underlain by carbonate rock, experience a higher frequency of sinkhole occurrences.
