John Legend, whose real name is John Stephens, didn’t always go by his legendary stage name. In fact, it was a chance encounter with a music producer that led to him adopting the moniker that would eventually become synonymous with his musical success.
During the early days of his career, Legend met J. Ivy, who was impressed by his singing and playing on tracks with Kanye West. Ivy suggested calling him “the legend,” which resonated with Legend and he decided to adopt it as his stage name.
However, there was a hurdle in using the name “Legend” professionally. A porn producer who dabbled in rockabilly music was already using the name Johnny Legend, leading to a possible trademark infringement case. To secure the rights to use “John Legend” as his stage name, Legend had to negotiate with Johnny Legend, who was 77 at the time.
After reaching a mutually exclusive agreement, Legend was able to officially become John Legend without facing any legal issues. This encounter with Johnny Legend added an interesting chapter to Legend’s journey to musical stardom.
In 2004, Legend signed his first record deal and released his debut album on his 26th birthday. Since then, he has achieved tremendous success in the music industry, winning multiple Grammy Awards and becoming an EGOT winner by adding an Emmy, Oscar, and Tony Award to his collection.
