SPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers for Season 2, Episode 3 of HBO’s “The Last of Us,” now available for streaming on Max.

Following the emotional aftermath of Joel’s death in “The Last of Us,” the narrative takes a quieter turn in Season 2, Episode 3, focusing on Ellie and Dina as they embark on their journey to Seattle. However, this episode introduces a new group of characters known as the Scars, a mysterious cult that communicates through whistling as they traverse a forest outside Seattle.

Emmy-winning prosthetics designer Barrie Gower and costume designer Ann Foley were tasked with bringing the Scars to life on screen. Drawing inspiration from the visual development material created for the original video game, Gower and Foley incorporated elements like brown ponchos and braided crown hairstyles for the female members of the cult.

To create the subtle scarring seen on the actors’ faces, Gower and his team meticulously crafted thin and delicate prosthetic appliances using a special paste adhesive. They experimented with different variations of scarring, ultimately settling on a depressive scar that closely resembled the look from the game. The application process for the actors took just 30-45 minutes each day.

While the true intentions of the Scars remain ambiguous in Episode 3, Gower emphasized the importance of not making the scarring too intimidating. The goal was to portray the Scars as a tribal clan with token scarring that served as a distinguishing feature without overshadowing the actors’ performances.

For Foley, this episode provided a welcome change from focusing solely on the infected creatures, allowing her department to delve into the unique aesthetic of the Scars. Everything about the Scars’ costumes was designed to reflect their self-sufficient nature, with ponchos repurposed from old boat materials and hand-painted symbols adding to their tribal identity.

Filming in Vancouver to stand in for Seattle presented practical challenges, prompting Foley to ensure that waterproof layers were integrated into the Scars’ garments to protect the cast during rainy shoots. As the story progresses in Seattle, Foley sees the introduction of the Scars as a natural evolution of the show’s exploration of different communities and identities.

“This season is about community,” Foley explains. “Whether it’s the Scars, the infected, or other groups, each community has its own identity that is reflected in their costumes. It’s essential for viewers to be able to recognize and connect with these characters through their attire.”

As the Scars become more prominent in the narrative, viewers can expect to see the evolution of their look and the impact they have on Ellie and Dina’s journey in “The Last of Us.” The world of technology is constantly evolving, with new innovations and advancements being made every day. One of the most exciting developments in recent years is the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). AI refers to the ability of machines to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as learning, problem-solving, and decision-making.

One of the key areas where AI is making a significant impact is in the healthcare industry. AI has the potential to revolutionize the way we diagnose, treat, and manage diseases, ultimately improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs.

One of the most promising applications of AI in healthcare is in medical imaging. AI algorithms can analyze medical images, such as X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans, with a level of accuracy and speed that is unmatched by human radiologists. This can help doctors detect diseases and conditions earlier, leading to faster and more effective treatment.

AI is also being used to personalize treatment plans for patients. By analyzing large amounts of data, AI algorithms can identify patterns and trends that can help doctors tailor treatments to individual patients based on their unique characteristics and medical history. This can lead to more effective treatments and better outcomes for patients.

In addition to diagnostics and treatment, AI is also being used to improve the efficiency of healthcare delivery. For example, AI-powered chatbots can help patients schedule appointments, access medical records, and receive personalized health advice, reducing the burden on healthcare providers and improving patient satisfaction.

While the potential benefits of AI in healthcare are vast, there are also challenges that need to be addressed. One of the biggest concerns is the ethical implications of using AI in healthcare, such as patient privacy and data security. There is also a need to ensure that AI algorithms are transparent and accountable, so that healthcare providers can trust the recommendations and decisions made by these systems.

Overall, the rise of AI in healthcare is an exciting development with the potential to transform the way we deliver and receive healthcare. By harnessing the power of AI, we can improve patient outcomes, reduce healthcare costs, and ultimately save lives. It is important for healthcare providers, policymakers, and researchers to work together to address the challenges and maximize the benefits of AI in healthcare.
