As the summer heat wave continues to grip North America, millions of people are facing record-breaking temperatures and humidity. With the heat dome settling over the U.S. Midwest and Northeast, it’s crucial to find ways to stay cool and comfortable during these extreme conditions.

Experts recommend using air conditioning effectively to beat the heat. Whether you have a central AC system, a window unit, or a portable device, it’s essential to ensure that your AC is running efficiently. Regular maintenance, such as changing the filter every three months, can help your AC work optimally and prevent costly breakdowns, especially during a heat wave when you need it most.

When it comes to using your AC while you’re away from home, the best approach depends on your goals. If you prioritize comfort, consider leaving the AC on at a slightly higher temperature while you’re out and lowering it when you return. For cost savings, some research suggests that turning the AC off during the day and only running it when you’re home may use slightly less energy.

In addition to air conditioning, you can take steps to keep your home cool without relying solely on AC. Blocking out sunlight with reflective coatings, blackout curtains, or aluminum foil can help reduce the heat entering your home. Using fans to circulate air and help with evaporation can also make a difference. Ceiling fans can be particularly effective when used in conjunction with AC or on their own.

To minimize heat build-up in your home, avoid using heat-producing appliances during the hottest part of the day. Instead, opt for energy-efficient lighting like LED bulbs, which emit less heat than traditional incandescent bulbs. By making these small changes, you can stay cool, save energy, and reduce strain on the power grid during the summer heat wave.

Remember that everyone has different temperature needs, so be mindful of the preferences of those in your household, especially children, older adults, and individuals with medical conditions that affect temperature regulation. By following these tips and being proactive in keeping your home cool, you can beat the heat and stay comfortable during this summer’s extreme weather conditions.
