Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and instead of gifting your loved one with traditional roses, why not consider naming a roach after them? The Bronx Zoo is celebrating the 15th anniversary of its popular Valentine’s Day “Name a Roach” program, where participants can symbolically name a Madagascar hissing cockroach in honor of their loved ones.

Since 2011, the Bronx Zoo’s “Name a Roach” fundraising program has been a hit, raising funds for the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and bringing attention to the zoo’s Madagascar hissing cockroach exhibit. Participants make a donation to WCS and receive a certificate with the roach’s new name, along with the option to purchase roach merchandise and even participate in a virtual roach encounter.

Debbie Schneiderman, who leads the Name a Roach initiative, describes the program as anti-traditional but notes that people are drawn to its unique charm. The program has raised over $1 million for the city’s zoos and has seen more than 60,000 roaches named over the years.

Madagascar hissing cockroaches, known scientifically as Gromphadorhina portentosa, are not your average roach. These charismatic critters are larger than typical city roaches, with a striped pattern on their backs and a round, almost cute shape. They communicate through hissing, a sound used for both territorial defense and attracting mates.

The Name a Roach program was initially met with skepticism but quickly became a fan favorite. Despite attempts to retire the program in 2014, public demand led to its revival. The roaches have even won over skeptics, with Schneiderman noting that they are gaining recognition and appreciation thanks to the initiative.

As someone who named a roach after her boyfriend a decade ago, I can attest to the lasting charm of these creatures. The roaches, tucked away in the zoo’s Madagascar! exhibit, continue to captivate visitors with their unique personalities. The Bronx Zoo team continues to innovate the program each year, adding new offerings while maintaining their love for these creepy-crawly companions.

In conclusion, the Name a Roach program has not only raised funds for conservation efforts but has also brought attention to the fascinating world of Madagascar hissing cockroaches. This Valentine’s Day, consider naming a roach in honor of your loved one and support the important work of the Wildlife Conservation Society.
