The highly anticipated documentary special “Living Proof” is set to make its debut on Hulu on December 1st in honor of World AIDS Day. Produced by the talented Emmy-winning actress, producer, and activist Sheryl Lee Ralph, the film shines a light on the experiences of Black women living with HIV. Along with its Hulu release, the documentary will also be available on the ABC Owned Television Stations’ digital and streaming platforms.
Taking place in Atlanta, a hotspot for the Southern HIV epidemic, “Living Proof” follows the journey of Freda Jones and Kennedi Lowman, the founders of LOTUS (Loving Ourselves Thru Unity and Strength). This grassroots organization is revolutionizing the way Black women navigate HIV, addressing issues such as medical discrimination, stigma, and public health funding cuts. Through support groups, discussions on PrEP, and community-driven health initiatives, these women are reclaiming their narratives and prioritizing their health.
Sheryl Lee Ralph expressed, “’Living Proof’ is both a love letter and a call to action — a vibrant testament to the healing power of visibility, truth, and community. Freda and Kennedi’s stories remind us that Black women are not just surviving HIV — they are leading the way in reimagining what it means to live with strength, pride, and purpose.”
Directed by Zeberiah Newman, “Living Proof” is a collaborative effort between The DIVA Foundation, ABC Owned Television Stations, and Gilead Sciences. With singer-songwriter B. Slade overseeing music supervision and scoring, the film promises to be a compelling and impactful portrayal of resilience and empowerment.
Deborah Telman, Gilead Sciences’ EVP of corporate affairs and general counsel, emphasized the importance of amplifying the voices of Black women in the fight against HIV. She stated, “We’re proud to support this important documentary that amplifies the voices of Black women, honors their persistence, resilience, power, and leadership, and shines a light on the central role they play in the fight against HIV.”
This project marks a continuation of the successful partnership between The DIVA Foundation and Hulu, following the release of the documentary “Unexpected” in 2023. Nominated for two Daytime Emmys, “Unexpected” focused on the stories of Masonia Traylor and Ciarra “Ci Ci” Covin, two mothers living with HIV.
