Health insurer Humana has revealed plans to expand its CenterWell and Conviva brand primary care operations into 11 states, including entering four new markets where the company currently has medical care providers.
Renowned for providing health insurance benefits to seniors through privatized Medicare Advantage plans, Humana is now focusing on expanding its medical care services.
Similar to its competitors like UnitedHealth Group and CVS Health, Humana operates a range of healthcare assets to offer both payment and care services. This strategy aims to enhance healthcare coordination, improve patient outcomes, and potentially offer cost-effective insurance products with discounts for care at company-owned facilities.
Dr. Sanjay Shetty, president of Humana’s CenterWell healthcare services segment, stated, “With our expansion efforts, we’re taking a thoughtful approach to growth, targeting communities that can benefit from our comprehensive and personalized senior care model. We aim to integrate CenterWell’s care delivery assets – including primary care, home health, and pharmacy services – to deliver superior outcomes and patient experiences.”
At the close of last year, Humana’s CenterWell and Conviva brands operated 344 senior-focused centers across 15 states, catering to approximately 390,000 individuals. During the company’s 2024 annual and fourth-quarter earnings call, executives expressed confidence in the growth potential of CenterWell’s primary care business, projecting the addition of 20 to 30 clinics and 30,000 to 50,000 patients.
Humana recently announced the launch of new CenterWell senior primary care centers in markets such as Augusta and Savannah, Georgia; the “Triad Region” of Burlington, Greensboro, and Winston Salem in North Carolina; and Wichita, Kansas. Additionally, CenterWell and Conviva plan to open 20-30 new centers this year across existing states like Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
These new centers will include senior primary care facilities co-located at select Walmart locations, following a deal signed by Humana last year to acquire 23 former Walmart Health sites. The company aims to open the remaining 11 locations by mid-year, building on the 12 centers launched in the previous year.
