Humana’s CenterWell healthcare services business has announced its expansion into the direct-to-patient specialty pharmacy sector, marking a significant move in response to the increasing demand for popular GLP-1 weight loss drugs. The company will now go beyond its traditional home-delivery pharmacy services to fill and ship orders for the weight loss drug Wegovy, which is prescribed through telehealth companies such as Hims & Hers Health, Inc., LifeMD, and Ro.
Partnering with Novo Nordisk, CenterWell Pharmacy will serve as the fulfillment partner for NovoCare, a pharmacy launched by the drug maker to offer convenient home shipments of Wegovy at a reduced cost of $499 per month for cash-paying patients. This initiative aims to provide affordable access to brand-name medications for self-pay patients who do not have insurance coverage for anti-obesity drugs, which can be costly even with discounts.
The collaboration between CenterWell and Novo Nordisk comes at a time when the Trump administration recently decided to abandon a proposal that would have extended coverage for weight loss drugs like Wegovy under Medicare and Medicaid plans. By offering direct-to-patient delivery options, CenterWell and Novo Nordisk seek to bridge the gap for individuals without insurance coverage for certain prescriptions, following in the footsteps of similar efforts by other pharmaceutical companies like Eli Lilly with LillyDirect.
In the rapidly evolving landscape of specialty pharmacy, health insurers are increasingly expanding their services to cater to the growing demand for specialty medications. Companies like UnitedHealth Group’s OptumRx and CVS Health have already made significant strides in this space, with Optum boasting 15 specialty pharmacies and CVS Health’s Accredo Specialty Pharmacy serving a substantial patient population.
Looking ahead, the trend towards direct-to-patient distribution models is expected to continue expanding, with potential applications in other medication categories such as migraine therapies and women’s/men’s health. With advancements in technology like telehealth enabling easier access to prescription drugs, CenterWell Pharmacy is well-positioned to scale its programs and meet the evolving needs of the market.
As the healthcare industry embraces innovation and digital transformation, the integration of direct-to-patient pharmacy services is poised to revolutionize the way patients access essential medications. By leveraging partnerships and cutting-edge technology, companies like CenterWell and Novo Nordisk are paving the way for a more efficient and patient-centered approach to healthcare delivery.
