Hyperpigmented Skin? Why Tranexamic Acid Is The Ingredient To Know
SHARE

Tranexamic acid has recently become a popular ingredient in skincare products, thanks to its skin-lightening properties. Originally used in medicine for its ability to stop hemorrhages, it was discovered that tranexamic acid could also help with hyperpigmentation when a patient experienced skin lightening as a side effect.

Now, tranexamic acid can be found in over-the-counter skincare products, making it more accessible than ever. As someone with hyperpigmentation-prone skin, I have found tranexamic acid serums to be incredibly effective. To understand how tranexamic acid works and why it is so beneficial for the skin, I reached out to experts in the field.

Debbie Thomas, a skin and laser expert, and Dr. Tatyana Lapa-Wright, an aesthetic doctor, provided valuable insights into the benefits of tranexamic acid. According to Dr. Lapa-Wright, tranexamic acid is a synthetic derivative of the amino acid lysine. It does not exfoliate the skin like traditional acids but instead brightens the skin by reducing excess melanin production. Thomas added that tranexamic acid is ideal for treating melasma, post-inflammatory pigmentation, and redness-prone skin.

Tranexamic acid works by inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase, which triggers pigment production in the skin. This can help reduce the appearance of dark patches and inflammation, making it effective for treating hyperpigmentation and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Both experts recommended using tranexamic acid once daily, preferably in the evening, after cleansing and before moisturizing. It is important to introduce the ingredient slowly and to use sun protection to maintain results.

Results from using tranexamic acid may not be immediate, but with consistent use, you can expect to see improvements in 8 to 16 weeks. When choosing a tranexamic acid formula, look for a concentration of 2 to 5% and additional ingredients like niacinamide, azelaic acid, and licorice root to enhance its effects. Avoid products with irritants like alcohol and fragrances, especially if you have sensitive skin. Opt for products with protective packaging to ensure ingredient stability.

With the right tranexamic acid formula and skincare routine, you can work towards achieving clearer and more even-toned skin. Give this ingredient a try and see the transformative effects it can have on your complexion.
