“I Believe That Justice Must Be Waged, It Is Not Something That Happens On Its Own”: Amal Clooney On What Keeps Her Fight As A Human Rights Barrister Alive

Amal Clooney is recognized as one of the most prominent human rights barristers of our time, dedicated to defending those who have been victims of systemic abuse, especially women and girls who have experienced sexual violence. In an interview with British Vogue, she expresses her admiration for individuals who bravely seek truth despite facing personal challenges. Clooney, along with her husband George, established the Clooney Foundation for Justice in 2019, offering free legal assistance in more than 40 countries.

The primary obstacle that Clooney encounters in her quest for justice is apathy. She emphasizes the importance of speaking out against injustice and abuses of power, as silence only hinders progress. According to Clooney, justice requires active engagement and cannot be achieved without the courage to stand up against wrongdoing.

When asked about her current projects, Clooney mentions her representation of Maria Ressa, a journalist in the Philippines facing severe charges for her work. Additionally, she has filed submissions at the International Court of Justice seeking justice for the victims of genocide in Myanmar and represents 871 victims of ISIS in a case in the East District of New York. Notably, one of her clients is Nadia Murad, a Yazidi survivor of sexual violence and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, in a groundbreaking case that aims to provide compensation to victims of ISIS’s atrocities.

Clooney also highlights the initiatives of the Clooney Foundation for Justice, including a global legal aid program for women and journalists operating in over 40 countries. The foundation’s efforts have resulted in the release of numerous imprisoned journalists and the provision of legal support to thousands of women facing violence, child marriage, or discrimination. Excitingly, the foundation is set to launch the Oxford Institute of Technology and Justice in collaboration with Oxford University, leveraging AI to enhance access to justice.

Through her work as a legal powerhouse and philanthropist, she continues to make a significant impact in the fight against injustice and the protection of vulnerable individuals worldwide.
