As a government shutdown looms, Democrats are expressing their indignation over the inability to allocate funds for healthcare for undocumented immigrants. This heated controversy, amplified by former President Trump’s provocations, suggests that Democrats are ready to pause government functions rather than back down on spending billions on healthcare for individuals who lack legal status in the country.

Nancy Pelosi, in an impassioned interview with NBC, made her frustrations abundantly clear.

NBC reporter: Do you have confidence that this is actually a real negotiation that is going to happen at the White House later today?

Nancy Pelosi: I have no clue. Reviewing what the President has stated, we’re discussing the healthcare needs of American families—infants in distress, mothers battling cancer, fathers recovering from strokes. The President has characterized this conversation as unserious and absurd.

In response to this characterization, I’ve heard their rhetoric and told them exactly where they can put it.

It’s astonishing that I used that language. My children will undoubtedly be appalled, and my grandchildren even more so. But to clarify, I am merely echoing the sentiments of our President. The underlying issue isn’t a shared philosophy on healthcare; it stems from voters expressing concern over rising costs, especially if Affordable Care Act subsidies are not renewed.
