Major Immigration Raid in Tallahassee: Over 100 Detained
In a significant operation on Thursday, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents apprehended more than 100 individuals deemed illegal immigrants at a construction site in Tallahassee, Florida. This action forms part of a broader ongoing investigation in the region, as articulated by ICE in a statement to local media.
Interestingly, some individuals managed to escape before being apprehended by ICE agents, a detail that speaks to the chaotic nature often accompanying such enforcement actions.
According to Homeland Security Investigations Tampa, the detainees hail from various Central and South American countries, including Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Colombia, and Honduras, among others. This diverse national representation underscores the complex immigration dynamics affecting the U.S.

The Tallahassee Democrat reported that this operation was conducted in collaboration with the Florida Highway Patrol and various federal law enforcement agencies. The raid specifically targeted a construction site for a new student housing development, intriguingly located just a stone’s throw from Florida State Universityâs campus.
Homeland Security Investigations (part of ICE), along with the Florida Highway Patrol and other local and federal agencies, conducted immigration raids in Tallahassee on Thursday, May 29. More than 100 individuals were detained at the construction site of a student housing development described as being âa short walk from Doak Campbell Stadiumâ in the CollegeTown area.
Officers meticulously checked the identification and permits of every individual present, releasing those who were compliant and detaining others.
An eyewitness from a nearby construction site mentioned that their location was raided about an hour earlier, with some fleeing while others were caught.
The operation’s timing and location raise important questions about the broader implications of immigration policy enforcement, particularly in areas with significant immigrant populations. The presence of individuals from multiple countries reflects not only the complexity of immigration issues but also the ongoing debate surrounding labor practices and the rights of workers in the U.S. construction industry.
