Former England captain Michael Vaughan criticized India’s decision to bowl part-time medium-pacer Shivam Dube in the final over of the T20 World Cup semifinal in Mumbai on March 5. The match saw England chasing 254 for a spot in the final, reaching 224/6 in 19 overs, needing 30 runs off the last over.

Despite having Axar Patel, a specialist bowler with an over left, Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav opted for Dube for the crucial final over. The move proved to be successful as India emerged victorious by seven runs, although Dube conceded 22 runs in the over.

After the game, Vaughan expressed his disagreement with the decision on Cricbuzz, stating that Axar Patel, a skilled bowler capable of delivering yorkers, should have been given the responsibility. Vaughan highlighted Dube’s recent struggles, with his last three overs in the tournament going for 68 runs.

Vaughan emphasized the importance of simplicity in cricket and the need to trust experienced players in crucial moments. He believed that Axar Patel should have been trusted to deliver in the pressure-filled final over.

On the other hand, former Indian captain Ajinkya Rahane defended Suryakumar Yadav’s decision, stating that it was a fair call under the circumstances. Rahane mentioned the risk of a spinner bowling to two left-handed batsmen in the final over and supported the captain’s choice of using Dube.

Rahane acknowledged Axar Patel’s expensive spell in the earlier overs and believed that Dube was the best option available to Yadav at that moment. Despite Dube’s struggles with wide deliveries, Rahane supported the decision based on the match situation.

India’s thrilling win propelled them to a second consecutive T20 World Cup final, where they will face New Zealand in Ahmedabad on Sunday, March 8.

In conclusion, the debate surrounding the final over decision showcased contrasting opinions from cricket experts. While Vaughan criticized the move, Rahane supported the captain’s call, emphasizing the importance of situational awareness in cricket. The outcome ultimately favored India, setting up an exciting final showdown with New Zealand.
