Renowned action star Iko Uwais is set to headline “Jakarta,” a family crime series spanning multiple generations, currently in development at Alcon Entertainment. Albert Hughes will direct the pilot and act as the producing director.
The series is crafted by writers Kirk Ward and Joshua W. Wagner, with Ward also serving as the showrunner. This project marks the second collaboration between Hughes and Ward, following their partnership on “The Continental,” the “John Wick” prequel series that aired on Peacock. Together, they aim to deliver a grounded and intense crime epic by combining Ward’s expertise in drama writing with Hughes’ film-making prowess.
Uwais will co-executive produce the series through his Uwais Pictures label, alongside Ryan Santoso. Hughes, Ward, and Wagner will also join the executive production team.
Set against the backdrop of Indonesia’s capital, as it grapples with rapid globalization, the series will leverage Uwais’ acclaimed action capabilities, showcased in films such as “The Raid” and “Wu Assassins,” and “Road House 2.” Hughes is acclaimed for his work on “Menace II Society” and “The Book of Eli.”
Alcon Entertainment, known for titles like “Blade Runner 2049” and “The Expanse,” will produce the series.
Uwais is represented by Gersh and Vault Entertainment, while Hughes is represented by Range Media Partners. Ward’s representation is through Gersh, and Wagner is represented by both Gersh and Lit Entertainment.
In addition to “Jakarta,” Uwais is also set to star in John Radel’s “Warrior,” an Indonesian action thriller that revisits the Silat-based fighting style that propelled his career. Moreover, he will lead the hospital siege thriller “MRI,” directed by Liam O’Donnell (“Alphas”). This marks the third collaboration between Uwais and O’Donnell, following their work on 2017’s “Beyond Skyline” and the upcoming “Skyline: Warpath.”
