Ilia Malinin: The Quad God Dominates the Grand Prix Final

After a stunning performance at the Grand Prix Final, Ilia Malinin solidified his status as the rising star of men’s figure skating. The 20-year-old American, known as the “Quad God,” delivered a flawless free skate that included a series of quadruple jumps, including the elusive quad axel that no one else has ever landed in competition. Despite a fall and a few minor mistakes, Malinin’s electrifying routine captivated the audience and secured him the top spot on the podium, outshining his Japanese rival Yuma Kagiyama.

Malinin’s victory in the Grand Prix Final marked the culmination of a perfect 2024 season, which also included a World Championship gold medal. His dominant performance has propelled him to the forefront of the sport, setting the stage for his potential Olympic debut in Milan in 2026. With a combined score of 292.12, Malinin left no doubt about his superiority on the ice, showcasing his technical prowess and showmanship to claim another major title.

The Grand Prix Final is a prestigious event that showcases the top talent in figure skating, making Malinin’s victory even more impressive. The competition featured the best skaters in each discipline, making it a highly anticipated event for fans and athletes alike. Malinin’s triumph was a highlight of a stellar weekend for the U.S. team, with Amber Glenn winning the women’s competition and Madison Chock and Evan Bates clinching the ice dance title.

Born and raised in Virginia to former Olympic figure skaters Roman Skorniakov and Tatiana Malinina, Malinin has been immersed in the world of skating since childhood. His parents, who coach at a local rink in Vienna, Va., have been instrumental in his development as a skater. Malinin’s journey to the top of the sport has been marked by perseverance and determination, culminating in his recent success on the international stage.

Despite missing out on the 2022 Beijing Olympics, where he was named the first alternate for the U.S. team, Malinin has quickly emerged as a dominant force in men’s figure skating. His decision to focus on his craft and continue competing paid off, as he went on to win gold at the World Championships and establish himself as the sport’s clear No. 1. His groundbreaking performance at the Grand Prix Final further solidified his reputation as a superstar in the making.

Looking ahead to the 2025 World Championships in Boston, Malinin shows no signs of slowing down. With seven wins in seven events in 2024 and a string of impressive performances under his belt, he is poised to defend his title and continue his reign as the top skater in the world. As the countdown to the 2026 Olympics begins, all eyes will be on Malinin as he aims to make history once again on the ice.
