In 2019, Sudan witnessed a historic revolution that led to the ousting of then-president Omar al-Bashir. However, the country’s turmoil continued in 2021 when the military staged another coup to seize power. This political instability culminated in a full-blown civil war in April 2023, pitting rival military factions—the armed forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF)—against each other. The ongoing conflict has resulted in a devastating humanitarian crisis, with millions facing famine, widespread displacement, and escalating casualties. Despite the severity of the situation, international media coverage has been limited, leaving the crisis largely overlooked.

Photographers have played a crucial role in shedding light on the realities of war, displacement, and hunger in Sudan. In a world where information is tightly controlled and the press heavily censored, images have become a vital tool for raising awareness about the crisis. The Africa Center has curated an exhibition titled “Resistance in Memory: Visions of Sudan,” showcasing the work of 12 emerging Sudanese photographers. Through 42 powerful photographs, the exhibition captures moments of compassion, love, joy, and resilience amidst the chaos of war.

The images featured in the exhibition range from black-and-white landscapes to intimate portraits, offering a glimpse into the lived experiences of Sudanese people. Six of the photographers still reside in Sudan, providing a firsthand account of the country’s tumultuous journey in recent years. The exhibition aims to honor the memory of a changing Sudan and celebrate the strength and perseverance of its people who refuse to be forgotten or defined by external forces.

“Resistance in Memory: Visions of Sudan” will be on display at The Africa Center in New York City until March 22. The exhibition serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring spirit of the Sudanese people in the face of adversity. Through these evocative images, viewers are invited to contemplate the human cost of conflict and the resilience that shines through even in the darkest of times.
