Argentinian tattoo artist Nano Ponto has captivated audiences with his innovative tattooing technique, which relies on intricate layering of tiny dots to produce stunning gradients and surreal visuals. With no formal training and no reliance on traditional tattoo machines, Ponto has forged a unique path over the past 13 years. His portfolio showcases a variety of imaginative designs, including a monochromatic eye shedding vibrant colors and a colorful beam radiating from an extraterrestrial craft.

Ponto explains his distinctive methodology: it may take more time than machine-driven tattooing, but his approach remains straightforward. “My technique involves layering dots until I achieve the right saturation and appearance, which can vary depending on the individual’s skin and the specific traits of the tattoo,” he shares. “I utilize a mixture of needle types to manipulate parameters like dot width, ink saturation, and tattooing depth, among other elements, to craft my artworks.”

Now residing in Buenos Aires, Ponto has spent recent years traveling through Europe, Mexico, and the U.S. This journey has been pivotal for his artistic evolution, allowing him to connect with other hand-poked tattoo artists who share his innovative techniques. “A decade ago, it became essential for me to travel to meet other artists in the hand-poked tattoo community; there wasn’t anyone in Argentina with whom I could exchange experiences at that time,” he adds.
