JD Vance and Usha: A Love Story Before the White House
Before they ascended to the roles of vice president and second lady of the United States, JD and Usha Vance were once just two students at Yale Law School, where their love story first began.
Reflecting on their early days together, Usha fondly recalls how they started off as friends before blossoming into something more. “We were friends first, because ā I mean, who wouldn’t want to be friends with JD? He was then, as now, the most interesting person I knew. A working-class guy who had overcome childhood traumas that I could barely fathom,” she shared of their initial connection, which eventually led to love.
Sharing a glimpse into their relationship, Usha revealed, “Although he’s a meat and potatoes kind of guy, he adapted to my vegetarian diet and learned to cook food from my mother, Indian food. Before I knew it, he’d become an integral part of my family, a person I could not imagine living without.”
JD, in his 2016 memoir Hillbilly Elegy, also expressed his admiration for Usha, describing her as a “genetic anomaly” with every positive quality one could hope for in a partner. “She seemed some sort of genetic anomaly, a combination of every positive quality a human being should have: bright, hardworking, tall, and beautiful,” he wrote.
Furthermore, JD acknowledged Usha’s significant role in his life, noting, “Even at my best, I’m a delayed explosion ā I can be defused, but only with skill and precision. It’s not just that I’ve learned to control myself but that Usha has learned how to manage me.”
