Senator Chuck Schumer speaking at the U.S. Capitol during a crucial government shutdown debate.

As detailed previously by The Gateway Pundit, it appears the government is on the brink of a shutdown, set to occur tonight at midnight. The cause? Democrats are standing firm, insisting on a stopgap funding bill that satisfies their $1.5 trillion spending demands, which reportedly includes funding for healthcare services for undocumented immigrants and gender transition procedures for minors.

In this political tug-of-war, Senate Democrats have opposed a stopgap bill backed by former President Trump, aimed at funding the government until November 21.

In a strikingly partisan move, Senate Democrats voted Tuesday evening in favor of the shutdown, leading to a tally of 53-47 along party lines. To stave off the impending shutdown, at least seven Democrats needed to cross the aisle and vote with Republicans—a scenario that evidently did not materialize.

The radical demands being championed by the left fringe of their party resonate only with a small segment of the Democratic base; notably, close to half of the party’s constituents are opposed to this imminent government shutdown.

According to a recent New York Times/Siena poll, 65% of Americans, nearly two-thirds, believe that shutting down the government is unwarranted. This sentiment is mirrored by 98% of Republicans and a notable portion of Democrats surveyed.

Poll results indicating public sentiment on a government shutdown led by Democrats.

Nevertheless, this overwhelming public opinion did not deter Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer from attempting to downplay the findings.

In a rather comical twist, Schumer labeled the poll—conducted by the supposedly left-leaning New York Times—as “biased.”

Clearly, laughter ensued in the chamber at this remark, illustrating the dissonance between political posturing and public sentiment.

It seems Democrats are ever so ready to evade accountability for their actions.
