South Carolina Prohibits State Funds for Ad Agencies Using NewsGuard

NewsGuard, a media “fact-checking” company established in 2018, presents itself as a non-partisan organization. It claims to evaluate the reliability of websites. However, its operations and social media activities suggest a bias against pro-Trump publishers and citizen journalists. The company is reportedly backed by Trump critics, elites, and media conglomerates.

Critics argue that NewsGuard’s activists are anti-Trump leftists. Information shared by the conservative website 100percentfedup with alleges that the organization is led by individuals who strongly oppose Trump.

NewsGuard’s purported mission involves undermining pro-Trump and conservative websites. Breitbart.com has reported that the organization advises advertisers to avoid pro-Trump media, impacting the financial viability of those outlets.

Financial Blacklisting: NewsGuard Advises Advertisers to Avoid Pro-Trump Media

NewsGuard, partnered with Microsoft and staffed by individuals linked to Obama and Clinton, has advised advertisers to withdraw from sites marked as “unreliable,” including Breitbart News, The Drudge Report, and the Daily Mail. This strategy not only silences pro-Trump media but also shifts advertising away from Trump supporters to those who prefer mainstream outlets.

A 2019 report by La Corte News found that conservative sites are twice as likely to be deemed unreliable compared to liberal publishers.

The US House of Representatives passed the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2025 in 2024. 124 Democrats opposed the military funding.

Speaker Johnson praised the act, noting it includes measures to prevent contracts with advertising firms like NewsGuard Technologies, which reportedly blacklist conservative news sources. Consequently, US military funding will no longer support NewsGuard.

Newsmax recently reported that South Carolina has joined other states in restricting government use of media-rating organizations like NewsGuard. The state has adopted a budget provision to prevent taxpayer-funded advertising from being influenced by firms that evaluate news outlets for alleged misinformation or bias.

Governor Henry McMaster approved legislation that prevents state agencies from using funds to contract with firms employing NewsGuard for government advertising.
