Just north of Cusco in the Sacred Valley of the Incas lies a hidden gem – Ceramicas Seminarios. Founded in 1980 by husband and wife duo, Pablo Seminario and Marilú Behar, this studio in the town of Urubamba is a testament to ancient Peruvian traditions. Specializing in sculptures, functional wares, and decorative objects, the team at Ceramicas Seminarios draws inspiration from the rich culture of the valley.

The journey of Pablo Seminario into the world of ceramics began at a young age, as he was captivated by huacos – pre-Columbian ceramic artifacts used in Andean rituals. His fascination only grew over the years, leading him to delve deeper into the techniques and designs of Peru’s ancient civilizations. Collaborating with his wife Marilú Behar, they developed a unique approach that blends these age-old practices with a contemporary touch. Their son, Kusi Seminario Behar, now joins them in this creative endeavor.

The studio, with a team of about 25 artisans, follows the “Seminario Style” characterized by sculptural elements, intricate linework, and the use of local materials. Every piece is crafted with meticulous care and attention to detail, blurring the lines between utilitarian objects and artistic creations. From clay preparation to hand-building and wheel throwing, each step of the process is meticulously carried out by the artisans.

One of the core principles of Ceramicas Seminarios is to source materials locally to uphold the authenticity of their craft. The artisans oversee every aspect of production, ensuring that even the firing process is carefully controlled to maintain the integrity of the pieces. Complex works require internal engineering techniques such as calculated joints, slow drying times, and precise planning to prevent any structural flaws.

In addition to creating and selling their works, Ceramicas Seminarios actively engages with the local tourism industry and educational programs like Murmur Ring’s immersion program. These initiatives not only provide financial support but also help in spreading awareness about their traditional techniques. By sharing their knowledge and skills, the studio aims to preserve these ancient practices and expand their reach.

You can explore and purchase their unique pieces on Etsy and stay updated on their latest projects by following them on Instagram. With a deep-rooted commitment to preserving Peruvian traditions and a contemporary artistic vision, Ceramicas Seminarios continues to be a beacon of creativity in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
