Inside the Trump administration’s quiet shift on Ukraine

US vice-president JD Vance surprised diplomats and attendees at a foreign policy forum in Washington last week with his comments on the war in Ukraine. Instead of the expected Maga-style criticism of Kyiv and sympathy for Russia, Vance expressed that Russia was asking for too much in their proposals to end the conflict.

This shift in tone by the Trump administration indicates a growing impatience with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, with suspicions rising that he may be the biggest obstacle to peace, rather than Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The US has been pushing for a ceasefire that could lead to peace negotiations and an end to the war, but Putin has rejected international calls to halt the fighting, despite threats of tough new sanctions.

Former US ambassador to Russia, Michael McFaul, noted that Trump may be realizing that he has given up too much without receiving anything in return from Putin. The US even expressed willingness to recognize Russia’s rule over Crimea in a set of proposals last month, a concession that enraged Ukraine and the EU but was ultimately rejected by Putin.

Trump’s social media posts reflect his impatience with Russia’s actions, particularly after the Kremlin fired missiles into civilian areas of Ukraine. There is a growing recognition that Putin cannot be trusted and is not negotiating seriously, according to former US ambassador to Ukraine Bill Taylor.

Zelenskyy has been cooperative and supportive of US demands for a ceasefire, and relations between Kyiv and Washington have improved since the Oval Office spat in February. A minerals deal between the two countries has opened up possibilities for joint investments in Ukraine’s critical resources, further strengthening US support for Ukraine’s defense.

However, it is still uncertain whether Trump has truly shifted his sympathies towards Ukraine or is willing to take action against Russia for its refusal to negotiate seriously. While most western leaders were critical of Putin’s offer of direct talks without a ceasefire, Trump praised the Russian leader’s move, calling it a “potentially great day for Russia and Ukraine.”

Some US politicians, like Senator Lindsey Graham, are pushing for “bone-crushing” sanctions on Russia if Putin does not engage in serious negotiations to end the war. The bipartisan support for such measures indicates that Ukraine still has strong backing on Capitol Hill.

Overall, there seems to be a growing frustration with Putin’s intransigence and a shift towards a tougher stance on Russia in order to bring an end to the conflict in Ukraine. Whether this will result in meaningful pressure on Putin remains to be seen.

In a recent statement, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned against trying to manipulate US President Donald Trump, stating that it would be a grave error. Analysts suggest that Russia is banking on Trump’s impatience with the peace process in Ukraine. Michael McFaul, former US ambassador to Russia, believes that Putin is playing a long game, counting on Trump losing interest and cutting off military aid to weaken the Ukrainian army.

However, some experts argue that the risk of Trump abandoning Ukraine has decreased in recent weeks. Thomas Graham, a Council on Foreign Relations fellow and former National Security Council staff member, points out that resolving the Ukraine issue is crucial for Trump’s goal of resetting US-Russia relations. Walking away from Ukraine would be seen as a failure and hinder any efforts to improve ties with Russia.

The situation in Ukraine remains complex, with both Putin and Trump facing pressure to navigate the delicate balance of power in the region. The peace process in Ukraine is at a critical juncture, and any missteps could have far-reaching consequences. As the international community closely watches these developments, the importance of diplomatic efforts and strategic decision-making cannot be overstated.

In conclusion, the dynamics between Russia, the US, and Ukraine are constantly evolving, and the stakes are high for all parties involved. The future of the peace process in Ukraine hinges on the actions and decisions of key players like Putin and Trump. Only time will tell how these complexities will unfold and what impact they will have on the region as a whole.
