Instagram Video Quality and Popularity: Understanding the Relationship

The quality of an Instagram video can play a significant role in its popularity, according to Adam Mosseri, the Meta executive in charge of Instagram and Threads. Mosseri explained that videos that are more popular are displayed in higher quality, while less popular videos are shown in lower quality.

In a recent video interview with The Verge, Mosseri disclosed that Instagram aims to showcase the best video quality possible. However, if a video doesn’t receive significant views over time, it may be downgraded to a lower quality to optimize performance.

This approach is not entirely new, as Meta previously discussed using different encoding settings based on a video’s popularity. After the video interview circulated on Threads, some users raised concerns and criticisms about this strategy, questioning its fairness.

In response to the feedback, Mosseri provided further clarification. He emphasized that quality adjustments are made on an aggregate level, not on an individual viewer basis. Creators who generate more views are prioritized for higher quality encoding, but it operates on a sliding scale rather than a binary threshold.

Critics suggested that this system may favor popular creators over smaller ones, giving them an advantage in delivering high-quality content. Mosseri acknowledged this concern but noted that video engagement is primarily driven by content rather than quality. He highlighted that original creators prioritize quality more than viewers.

Ultimately, Mosseri reassured users that while quality may vary based on popularity, the impact on viewer interaction is minimal. The focus remains on delivering engaging content, regardless of the video’s quality settings.
