Iran has responded strongly to United States President Donald Trump’s comments suggesting that they should not play at the FIFA World Cup this year for their own safety. The Iranian team, who were among the first to qualify for the tournament, stated that the USA cannot exclude them from the competition as they are only hosts and did not qualify themselves.

In a statement released on March 13, Iran emphasized that the World Cup is an international event governed by FIFA, not any individual country. They highlighted their team’s strong performance and qualification for the tournament, asserting that no country has the authority to exclude them. Iran questioned the USA’s ability to provide security for the participating teams and emphasized that the World Cup should not be politicized.

The statement from Iran came shortly after President Trump’s social media post expressing concerns about Iran’s participation at the World Cup. While Trump stated that the Iranian team was welcome to compete, he also raised doubts about the appropriateness of their presence for safety reasons.

Despite the ongoing controversy, Iran has not officially withdrawn from the FIFA World Cup. However, their sports minister indicated that the team would not be traveling to the United States for the tournament.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has also weighed in on the issue, expressing his desire to see Iran participate in the World Cup. He revealed that he had discussed the matter with President Trump, who reiterated Iran’s welcome to compete in the tournament.

Iran has been drawn into Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand for the World Cup. Speculations suggest that Italy could replace Iran if they decide not to participate.

Overall, the situation surrounding Iran’s participation in the FIFA World Cup remains uncertain, with conflicting statements from different parties involved. The controversy underscores the intersection of sports, politics, and international relations on the global stage.
