The Irish government has announced a groundbreaking initiative that will provide 2,000 artists with weekly stipends as part of a new basic income program. This move comes after a successful three-year pilot program that demonstrated the benefits of supporting artists financially.

Under the new program, artists will receive unrestricted weekly payments of €325 (~$383) for a period of three years. This amounts to approximately €16,900 (~$19,919) per year, providing much-needed financial stability for those working in the arts sector.

The pilot program, which was initially launched in 2022, received positive feedback from participants who reported increased productivity and reduced anxiety as a result of the guaranteed income. As a result of its success, the Irish government has allocated €18.27 million (~$21.52 million) in the 2026 budget to extend and fund the program.

The National Campaign for the Arts (NCFA) has welcomed the government’s decision, describing the basic income program as a “landmark commitment to invest in Ireland’s arts industries.” The NCFA committee emphasized the positive impact of the program on artists, stating that it has helped stabilize their working conditions and allowed them to focus on their creative pursuits.

Research conducted by the Irish culture ministry found that for every euro invested in the pilot program, there was a return of €1.39 to Irish society. Artists who participated in the program reported that the payments alleviated financial stress, allowing them to dedicate more time to their artistic practice.

Participants also noted that the program affirmed their identities as artists and validated their profession. By providing financial support, the program has enabled artists to pursue their craft without having to rely on unrelated jobs to make ends meet.

This initiative aligns with efforts in the United States, where nonprofit organizations are implementing basic income programs for artists to provide increased financial support. The NCFA committee believes that Ireland can become a world leader in supporting its artistic community through this unique scheme, ultimately benefiting society as a whole.

Overall, the new basic income program for artists in Ireland represents a significant investment in the arts sector and a recognition of the important role that artists play in society. By providing financial stability and support, the program is expected to foster creativity, innovation, and artistic excellence in Ireland.
