Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) made a significant change in their playing XI for the match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in IPL 2025. Moeen Ali, who has been struggling with form, was left out of the squad for this crucial clash. The game took place at the iconic Eden Gardens on Saturday, April 26.
Ali’s exclusion from the team can be attributed to his poor performance this season. In the four games he played, Ali only managed to pick up three wickets while conceding 11 overs. Furthermore, his batting contributions have been minimal, scoring just five runs at an average of 2.50. In the previous match against the Gujarat Titans, Ali failed to make an impact, returning with figures of 0/27 and getting dismissed for a duck.
In place of Ali, former West Indies T20I captain Rovman Powell was included in the playing XI to make his IPL debut for KKR. Powell has a decent record in the IPL, scoring 360 runs in 27 games at an average of 18.57 and a strike rate of 147.54, with a top score of 67*.
Alongside Powell, left-arm pacer Chetan Sakariya replaced Ramandeep Singh in the lineup. Singh has struggled with the bat, prompting the team management to make this change.
The KKR playing XI for the game consisted of Rahmanullah Gurbaz as the wicketkeeper, with Sunil Narine, Ajinkya Rahane leading the team. The batting lineup included Venkatesh Iyer, Rinku Singh, and Andre Russell. The bowling attack featured Powell, Sakariya, Vaibhav Arora, Harshit Rana, and Varun Chakaravarthy.
KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane emphasized the need for the batters to be brave in chasing down the target set by PBKS. With the team currently placed seventh in the IPL 2025 points table, Rahane highlighted the importance of the batting unit stepping up to secure victories in the remaining games to qualify for the playoffs.
Overall, the changes in the KKR lineup indicate a strategic shift to address the team’s performance issues and boost their chances in the tournament. With key players stepping up and new faces making their mark, KKR aims to turn their season around and make a strong push towards the playoffs.
