Elon Musk’s AI Company Faces Departures Amid Safety Concerns

Recent reports suggest that Elon Musk is actively working to push xAI’s Grok chatbot to be “more unhinged,” as confirmed by a former employee who spoke to The Verge about the ongoing developments at Musk’s AI company.

Following the news of SpaceX’s acquisition of xAI, which had previously acquired Musk’s social media company X, a significant number of engineers and co-founders have announced their departure from the company. While some are leaving to pursue new ventures, Musk has indicated that this exodus is part of a restructuring effort to streamline xAI’s operations.

However, sources who have left the company, including at least one before the recent wave of departures, have raised concerns about xAI’s approach to safety. The company faced global scrutiny after it was revealed that Grok was used to generate over a million sexualized images, including deepfakes of real women and minors.

One source described the safety department at xAI as non-existent, while another suggested that Musk is actively pushing for a more radical approach to the AI model, viewing safety measures as a form of censorship. This disregard for safety has led to disillusionment among employees.

In addition to safety concerns, former employees also cited a lack of direction at xAI, with one individual expressing frustration at the company’s perceived stagnation in comparison to its competitors.
