The New York Islanders have clinched the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NHL Draft after emerging victorious in the draft lottery. General Manager Mathieu Darche has made it clear that the team has no intention of trading away this valuable pick.

Speaking at the NHL Scouting Combine, Darche emphasized that while the team has not yet finalized their decision on who to select with the top pick, they are leaning towards keeping it rather than exploring trade options. He expressed confidence in the team’s ability to make a strong pick that will have a lasting impact on the franchise.

Despite having the tenth-best odds to secure the No. 1 pick, the Islanders defied the odds and came out on top. With the opportunity to add an elite prospect to their roster, Darche is focused on utilizing the scouting combine to evaluate potential picks and meet with prospects.

Darche highlighted the depth of talent available in this year’s draft class and stressed the importance of making a selection that will benefit the team in the long run. While he is open to listening to trade offers, Darche made it clear that it would take a significant offer to sway him from keeping the pick.

The 2025 NHL Draft is set to take place on June 27 in Los Angeles, and Darche fully expects the Islanders to make their first overall pick unless an unforeseen opportunity arises.

In particular, Darche has his eye on defenseman Matthew Schaefer as a potential candidate for the No. 1 pick. Schaefer, who plays for Erie in the Ontario Hockey League, is highly regarded for his leadership qualities and versatility on the ice. Despite a shortened season due to injury, Schaefer has impressed scouts and team officials with his character and skill set.

Darche and the Islanders staff recently met with Schaefer for dinner and were impressed by his demeanor and abilities. As the draft approaches, all eyes will be on the Islanders as they look to make a franchise-altering pick with the top selection.
