The Gujarat Polo Club promoter, Arpan Gupta, recently shared the club’s vision behind the Ahmedabad Polo Tournament and how it could help India revive its glory in the sport ahead of the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad.
India has a rich history in Polo, but the sport has not been included in the Olympics since 1936. Additionally, polo has only been featured once at the Commonwealth Games in 1958. In an exclusive interview with Sportskeeda at the launch event of the Ahmedabad Polo Tournament, Arpan Gupta expressed his team’s vision to bring the sport back to the grand stage of the Commonwealth Games and Olympics.
With the Commonwealth Games 2030 allotted to Ahmedabad and the possibility of the Summer Olympics 2036 happening in India, Gupta was asked if the Ahmedabad Polo Tournament aims to make a strong case for the sport’s return to the grand stage. He responded enthusiastically, stating, “India is one of the most successful countries in polo history, and we aim to showcase that success on the global stage.”
The Ahmedabad Polo Tournament is scheduled to take place from January 2 to 4 at the Gujarat Polo Club ground in Shela. The league will feature six men’s teams and two women’s teams, with matches spread across the three days.
During the interview, Arpan Gupta mentioned that India should follow Argentina’s model in polo, as the country has a strong polo culture. He emphasized the need to build academies and promote the sport from a young age to revive India’s polo heritage.
Gupta also revealed that the Ahmedabad Polo Tournament is not a one-time event but part of a larger vision to establish a nationwide structure for polo in India. He expressed hope for building an ecosystem and maintaining continuity in promoting the sport.
