The infamous Pennywise the Clown is making a chilling return, but this time he’s creeping his way onto your TV screens.
HBO Max has unveiled the first teaser for “Welcome to Derry,” the upcoming prequel series to the “It” movies set to premiere this autumn.
Taking place 27 years before the events of the previous films, “Welcome to Derry” delves into It’s past killing spree before the encounters depicted in the original movies. The malevolent entity It preys on children before going into a lengthy hibernation, only to resurface every 27 years.
Returning as Pennywise is Bill Skarsgard, joined by a talented ensemble cast including Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, James Remar, Stephen Rider, Madeleine Stowe, and Rudy Mancuso.
Director Andy Muschietti and producer Barbara Muschietti expressed their love for Stephen King’s source material in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. They shared their excitement for exploring the untold stories within the “It” universe, particularly focusing on the interludes written by Mike Hanlon based on his investigations and interviews with the town’s elderly residents. “Welcome to Derry” will delve into themes of friendship, loss, belief, and the use of fear as a weapon, providing a fresh perspective on the horror narrative.
The series is a collaborative effort between HBO and Warner Bros. Television, with a compelling storyline crafted by the Muschietti siblings and Jason Fuchs. Executive producers include Brad Caleb Kane, David Coatsworth, Bill Skarsgård, Shelley Meals, Roy Lee, and Dan Lin. Fuchs, who penned the teleplay for the pilot episode, serves as a co-showrunner alongside Kane.
