Newell’s Old Boys’ vice president, Juan Manuel Medina, recently shared his thoughts on the potential return of Lionel Messi to the club where it all began for the Argentine superstar. Messi, who started his football journey with Newell’s Old Boys before making a name for himself at Barcelona, PSG, and currently Inter Miami, is being eyed by his boyhood club for a return in 2027.

According to reports, the club is working on a project that extends beyond just Messi’s return to the team. They are looking to revamp infrastructure and create a competitive sporting environment that could attract the global football icon back to his roots. Informal discussions have already taken place, and the club is hopeful that Messi will consider playing the first half of 2027 with Newell’s Old Boys.

As Messi gears up to represent Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, there has been no confirmation about his retirement plans. However, Newell’s Old Boys see his potential return as a fitting way for the 38-year-old to end his illustrious career.

Despite the speculation surrounding Messi’s future, he signed a contract extension with Inter Miami in October last year, keeping him at the club until December 2028. In a statement after the extension, Messi expressed his happiness in continuing with the project at Inter Miami and playing at the Miami Freedom Park stadium.

Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham also lauded Messi’s commitment to the club and the game, highlighting his impact on inspiring the next generation of talent in the country. Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, Messi has been a standout performer, scoring 77 goals and providing 44 assists in 88 games, winning the MLS Cup, the Leagues Cup, and the Supporters’ Shield.

Overall, the potential return of Lionel Messi to Newell’s Old Boys has sparked excitement among fans and officials alike. The club’s ambitious project to lure Messi back to his first club could mark a significant chapter in the football icon’s career, as he contemplates his next move in the world of football.
