In the grand tapestry of American governance, it’s crucial to remember that the Trump administration is a mere chapter—not the entire story. This is a fact that not only slips the minds of many Americans but also seems lost on some of the world’s self-proclaimed autocrats. They might be enjoying their moment in the sun, but history reminds us that Donald Trump, like all administrations, will eventually fade, making way for the resilient spirit of American democracy to re-emerge.

On a recent MSNBC segment, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) provided a timely reminder during discussions about Sen. Chris Van Hollen’s visit to El Salvador:
I felt immense pride for my colleague Chris Van Hollen as he undertook this significant journey, as it brought a much-needed sense of humanity back into this ongoing debate. He didn’t let fear paralyze him; instead, he took action and demonstrated that we can indeed board a plane and confront pressing issues head-on.
Of course, there were those who tried to misrepresent the trip, concocting a fabricated margarita scene. But let’s be clear: President Bukele, who has openly embraced dictatorship, and other global autocrats, need to recognize that the Trump administration is not an eternal fixture.
We are on a path to restore robust democracy in America, and we will surely remember who championed democracy and who sought to lead us into the shadows of dictatorship. Chris Van Hollen has made it clear where America stands, and we will not cower before any dictator.
The Trump administration, characterized by its divisive, destructive, and often illegal practices, is indeed a temporary phenomenon. The waves of protests, the losses in special elections—these are indicators that the tide is turning, and soon, Republicans may find themselves on the losing end of power.
What Rep. Raskin articulated is critical: when Democrats reclaim power, they will not forget the global dictators who enabled Trump’s agenda. The consequences of their actions will not be swept under the rug.
Those who attempted to undermine the stability of one of the world’s greatest democracies will face repercussions, and the dictators who allied with Trump will not emerge unscathed.
