Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) criticized Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ahead of President Donald Trump’s military parade. Raskin appeared on MSNBC’s “The Weekend” to discuss comments made by Hegseth at a hearing. When asked about respecting a Supreme Court decision regarding deploying Marines at protests, Hegseth suggested that local judges should not determine foreign or national security policy. Raskin responded by calling Hegseth a “DUI hire” and highlighting reports of his excessive drinking. Raskin emphasized the importance of the Constitution over individual leaders, stating that the president’s role is to faithfully execute the laws. Jamie Raskin Slams ‘DUI Hire’ Pete Hegseth

Representative Raskin, a Democrat from Maryland, made these remarks in light of President Trump’s upcoming military parade and amidst nationwide protests against authoritarianism on Saturday. Trump had previously threatened to use excessive force against protestors at the parade.
Raskin also criticized recent attacks on dissent by the Trump administration, such as the handcuffing of Senator Alex Padilla at Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s press conference and the treatment of Representative LaMonica McIver.
“The freedom of speech, press, petitioning government, and assembly are fundamental rights that stand in direct opposition to the rule of a king, who does not tolerate dissent or free speech,” Raskin stated. “Having these rights is essential to preventing authoritarianism.”
