Team India’s star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is set to sit out of the second Test match against England in the ongoing five-match series. The match is scheduled to take place at Edgbaston, Birmingham, from July 2 to 6.
As per a report from The Indian Express, Bumrah is likely to be rested for the game as part of his workload management strategy. Despite putting up an impressive performance in England’s first innings in the series opener at Headingley, Leeds, where he claimed his 14th five-wicket haul in Tests, Bumrah remained wicketless in the second innings as England chased down a massive 371-run target to take a 1-0 lead.
The report indicates that Bumrah is expected to make a comeback in the playing XI for the third Test at Lord’s, London, scheduled from July 10 to 14. His absence would be a significant blow to the Indian team as he was their standout performer with the ball in the first Test. Possible replacements for the 31-year-old include Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, and Harshit Rana.
Legendary spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed his opinion that Bumrah should play in the second Test to give India a chance to level the series after the defeat in Leeds. Ashwin suggested making just one change to the playing XI by including left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav. In a recent YouTube video on his channel ‘Ashwin,’ he stated that Bumrah should take a break after the second Test, given the gap between the third and fourth matches.
Bumrah is expected to feature in only three Tests in the series, having played all five games in India’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. However, a back injury in the final Test of that series kept him out of the 2025 Champions Trophy. His workload management has been closely monitored, leading to him missing out on the Test captaincy following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from red-ball cricket.
In conclusion, Bumrah’s absence in the second Test against England will be a setback for Team India, but it presents an opportunity for other bowlers to step up and fill the void. The decision to rest Bumrah is a strategic move aimed at ensuring his fitness and longevity in the demanding international cricket calendar.
