Jay Ellis Joins Hulu’s “Not Suitable for Work” Comedy Series

Jay Ellis has officially been cast in the highly anticipated comedy series “Not Suitable for Work,” produced by Hulu and created by Mindy Kaling.

According to the series’ official logline, “Not Suitable for Work” portrays the lives of “five work-obsessed twenty-somethings striving for professional success and, if they find a moment, personal happiness in Manhattan’s most glamorous neighborhood, Murray Hill.”

In this new role, Ellis will portray Bill Gibson, characterized as “a charismatic and successful investment banker admired as his firm’s highest-earning managing director.” He joins an ensemble cast that includes Ella Hunt, Avantika, Will Angus, Jack Martin, and Nicholas Duvernay, all of whom play the core group of ambitious twenty-somethings navigating their careers and personal lives.

This project marks the second collaboration between Ellis and Kaling, as he previously played coach Jay Brown in “Running Point,” Kaling’s Netflix comedy series that debuted in 2025 and has been renewed for a second season. However, Ellis is most recognized for his portrayal of Lawrence Walker in HBO’s acclaimed show “Insecure,” which aired for five seasons from 2016 to 2021. Additionally, he appeared as Lieutenant Reuben “Payback” Fitch in the blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick,” released in 2022. Coming up, fans can look forward to seeing him in the 2024 Lionsgate film “Freaky Tales” and in “All Her Fault” on Peacock. His representation includes UTA, Entertainment 360, the Lede Company, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman.

The production team behind “Not Suitable for Work” comprises executive producers Kaling, showrunner Charlie Grandy, and 3 Arts Entertainment’s Howard Klein. Kaling International is producing in association with Warner Bros. Television, where both Kaling and Grandy maintain overall deals.
