Jeremy Allen White is gearing up for Thanksgiving, where he plans to spend the holiday with about 30 friends in Los Angeles. He will be contributing to the feast with a green bean casserole, sweet potato side, and a salad. As a household name for his award-winning role as Carmy on “The Bear,” White admits that the pressure to cook well has increased significantly.

Reflecting on past holiday gatherings, White shares that there was a Thanksgiving after the first season of his show where he cooked for everyone, as well as a Christmas where he prepared a meal for 30 people before shooting the first season. Despite his culinary background, White remains humble and acknowledges the expectations placed on him.

When asked about critiquing others’ cooking, White reveals that he is too kind to criticize and feels he hasn’t earned the right to do so. As awards buzz surrounds his portrayal of Bruce Springsteen in “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere,” White is also taking on the role of Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz in the Aaron Sorkin-written and directed “The Social Network” sequel, “The Social Reckoning,” alongside Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg.

In addition to his acting projects, White is voicing Rotta, Jabba the Hutt’s son in the upcoming “The Mandalorian & Grogu” feature. Amidst his busy schedule, White took the time to visit the Variety offices before heading to Santa Barbara for a screening of “Deliver Me From Nowhere” and a conversation hosted by Oprah Winfrey.

Reflecting on his experience with Springsteen, White shares that the legendary musician has become a friend and expresses his admiration for the artist. Despite his newfound connection to New Jersey through Springsteen, White maintains that he is not a Jersey boy but appreciates the beauty of the state.

White recalls the moment when Springsteen mistook his singing for his own, highlighting the support and encouragement he received throughout the filming process. When discussing the possibility of using prosthetics for his role as Springsteen, White explains that he and director Scott Cooper opted for a more internalized approach to the performance.

Reflecting on his portrayal of Springsteen, White admits that he never felt he fully captured the essence of the musician and stayed true to the character’s emotions during a challenging period in his life. As an artist, White acknowledges the familiar feelings of doubt and fear that often accompany creative endeavors.

Despite his success and accolades, White remains grounded and modest about his work, emphasizing that he never feels entirely satisfied with his performances and continually strives to improve. As he navigates his career and takes on diverse roles, White’s dedication to his craft and humility shine through in his approach to acting and storytelling. One of the greatest aspects of being an actor is the constant pursuit of growth and challenge. As actor Jeremy Allen White reflects on his time on the show “Shameless,” he acknowledges that there were moments where he felt a sense of laziness creeping in after being on the show for several seasons. However, he understands the importance of never feeling like you have it all figured out, as that would take away the excitement of trying new things.

Moving on to his role in “The Bear,” White shares that his approach to this show feels different. While “Shameless” was an ensemble cast, he feels a stronger connection to his character and the creator of the show, Christopher Storer. This personal connection motivates him to never become complacent in his work and always strive for more.

As White gears up for Season 5 of “The Bear,” he discusses his upcoming role in “Mandalorian” as Jabba the Hutt’s son, Rotta. Despite being new to voice work, White was thrilled to be part of the “Star Wars” universe and create a character that his daughters can enjoy. Finding his Rotta voice was a collaborative effort with Jon Favreau, and he is excited to see the final result.

In his role in the upcoming “Social Network” sequel, White plays real-life journalist Jeff Horwitz. Despite not meeting with Horwitz personally, White trusted director Aaron Sorkin’s vision for the character and focused on serving the script rather than imitating the real person. Memorizing Sorkin’s dialogue was a challenge, but White found it to be a refreshing change of pace.

With each new role and project, Jeremy Allen White embraces the unknown and continues to push himself to grow as an actor. His dedication to his craft and willingness to take on new challenges ensure that he never becomes complacent in his work. There was a certain sense of relief in not having to delve deep into emotional work and just focus on being present for my fellow actors and honoring Aaron Sorkin’s words. It was a refreshing change of pace to just be able to trust in the script and let it guide my performance.

Now, has the movie changed my views on social media? Not really. I’ve always had my doubts about the impact of social media on our lives and the way it can consume us. I admit, I can be a bit of a scroller myself, and I know how addictive those dopamine hits can be.

It’s a constant struggle to resist the urge to mindlessly scroll through my phone, only to realize an hour later that I’ve accomplished nothing. Deleting social media apps helps when I’m working, but it’s hard to completely disconnect when it has become such a pervasive part of our daily lives.

I do worry about my kids using social media in the future. I hope to shield them from it for as long as possible, so they can remember a time when they weren’t constantly connected. There seems to be a shift among teenagers towards valuing privacy and less online presence, which gives me hope for a potential revolution against the pressures of social media.

As for leading the revolution, I’m no activist. I may not have the latest iPhone model, but my old, broken phone actually helps me stay off social media. I intentionally disabled my mobile data while traveling, so I can only access the internet when connected to Wi-Fi. It’s a small step, but it limits my online usage and forces me to be more present in the moment.

Despite the convenience of Wi-Fi being almost everywhere now, I prefer not to rely on it. I have a stubborn streak and don’t like asking for help. This may seem like a small inconvenience, but it’s my way of maintaining some control over my online habits.

In the end, finding a balance between staying connected and disconnecting is a personal journey. While social media has its benefits, it’s important to be mindful of its impact on our mental health and relationships. And who knows, maybe a small change in our habits can lead to a bigger revolution in how we engage with technology.
