Cris Abrego Makes History as First Latino Chair of Television Academy

As the entertainment world gears up for Sunday’s Primetime Emmy Awards, coinciding with the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro extends his congratulations to Cris Abrego. Abrego is set to make history as the first Latino Chair of the Television Academy to preside over the prestigious event.

“Tonight, Cris Abrego will make history as the first Latino to lead the Television Academy during television’s biggest night,” Castro tells Variety in an exclusive statement. “For decades, Cris has been a trailblazer and successful entrepreneur, shaping modern entertainment and championing underrepresented voices in Hollywood. As Latinos continue to push for greater representation in American media, tonight’s Emmy Awards represent a significant step forward. Congratulations to Cris and to all those who will follow in his footsteps.”

Abrego currently serves as the chairman of the Americas at Banijay, a global production company, and is the CEO of Hyphenate Media Group, a company he co-founded with Eva Longoria. His two-year term as chairman of the Television Academy began on January 1.

This year’s Emmy nominations reflect a growing diversity within the industry, with 30 out of the 96 acting nominees being people of color. Among them are four notable Latino performers, including Selena Gomez, Sofia Vergara, Liza Colón-Zayas, and Nava Mau. Brazilian star Néstor Carbonell has also already won an Emmy for guest drama actor during the Creative Arts ceremony.

Gomez, a multi-talented artist, has made history as the most Emmy-nominated Latina producer and has secured her first acting nomination this year. Vergara, ColĂłn-Zayas, and Mau also represent the growing presence of Latinas in the Emmy nominations.

In addition to the acting categories, Issa LĂłpez and Francesca Sloane have received nominations for their work behind the scenes, further highlighting the contributions of Latinos in the industry.

Congressman Castro has been a vocal advocate for increasing Latino representation in the media and entertainment industry. He has commissioned reports highlighting the underrepresentation of Latinos and has championed initiatives to promote diversity and inclusion.

This week, Castro will participate in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s annual Leadership Conference, celebrating Latino excellence in action. The event will feature discussions on innovation, influence, and representation in the Latino community.

The conference will culminate with the 47th Annual Awards Gala, honoring exceptional Latino trailblazers and their contributions to society.
