President Joe Biden recently backtracked on comments he made regarding supporters of former President Donald Trump, clarifying that he was actually referring to pro-Trump comic Tony Hinchcliffe. Hinchcliffe had sparked controversy by calling Puerto Rico, a US territory, an “island of garbage” during a rally at Madison Square Garden.

Initially, Biden was quoted as saying, “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters,” which led to a backlash from Republicans. However, the White House later released a transcript that included an apostrophe, indicating that Biden was specifically addressing the words of Hinchcliffe and not all Trump supporters.

In a video call with non-profit organization Voto Latino, Biden explained, “Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump’s supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage – which is the only word I can think of to describe it. His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That’s all I meant to say. The comments at that rally don’t reflect who we are as a nation.”

Trump loyalists have seized on Biden’s comments, drawing comparisons to a remark made by Hillary Clinton in 2016 when she referred to half of Trump’s supporters as belonging to a “basket of deplorables.” Trump himself suggested that Kamala Harris, his rival for the White House, was running a “campaign of hate.”

During his campaign, Trump has labeled his opponents as “the enemy from within,” a rhetoric that Harris criticized as divisive. Trump emphasized the Madison Square Garden rally as a “love fest,” downplaying the controversy surrounding Hinchcliffe’s remarks.

Hinchcliffe, in defense of his material, claimed that his critics “have no sense of humor.” The comedian allegedly practiced the controversial joke at a New York comedy club the night before the rally and faced a negative reaction. Despite calls for an apology from prominent figures in Puerto Rico and outrage from Republicans in Latino communities, Trump did not issue a formal apology.

The controversy surrounding Hinchcliffe’s comments and Biden’s clarification highlight the ongoing tensions and divisions in American politics. It serves as a reminder of the importance of respectful discourse and the need to bridge the gap between opposing political ideologies.
