John Stamos recently shared a hilarious story on a podcast about his brief encounter with Scientology as a teenager. The actor revealed that he was nearly a Scientologist, but his antics got him kicked out of the organization after just one meeting.
During an interview on the podcast “Friend in High Places” with celebrity impressionist Matt Friend, Stamos recounted how he ended up at a Scientology building on Hollywood Boulevard at the age of 16 or 17. He had been invited by a girl from his acting class and decided to check it out.
Once inside the building, Stamos was asked to undergo auditing using the E-meter, a device that measures electrical currents in the body. Holding two metallic cans, Stamos couldn’t resist the urge to crack a joke. In a cartoonish voice, he exclaimed, “Hello… Peabody in the Wayback Machine!” referencing the characters from “Rocky and Bullwinkle.”
Unsurprisingly, the Scientologists were not amused by Stamos’ antics and promptly kicked him out of the meeting. Reflecting on the incident in his memoir “If You Would Have Told Me,” Stamos recalled being handed a book by a woman named Mia after class, which led to his brief encounter with the organization.
Despite his short-lived experience with Scientology, Stamos has always maintained a sense of humor about the situation. The actor’s playful nature and ability to find humor in any situation have endeared him to fans over the years.
