Today is an apt occasion to reflect on how the world could benefit from embodying more of Alber Elbaz’s spirit.
Elbaz infused fashion with joy, wit, intuition, empathy, and a natural flair. He had a unique approach to understanding women’s lives, aiming to simplify complexity with delight and ease.
Five years have passed since Elbaz sadly succumbed to Covid-19 at the American Hospital in Paris. In this half-decade, his influence remains relevant. His designs continue to be cherished, residing in closets as trusted evening wear choices, as well as in museums and archives. Many pieces are lovingly passed down through generations.
Backstage at the Schiaparelli ready-to-wear show in March, Daniel Roseberry recalled Elbaz’s qualities during a conversation with Nicole Phelps. Reflecting on the impact Elbaz had on him in the Noughties, Roseberry noted, “His love of women was so storied.” When designing that collection, Elbaz’s sculptural single-seam dresses came to Roseberry’s mind. Moreover, the meticulous attention and craftsmanship from Elbaz’s studio and atelier were evident on the Lanvin runway throughout his 14 years there.
