The governments of the United States of America and the People’s Republic of China have convened once again, this time to reflect on their previous discussions and commitments regarding economic and trade relations.

In light of the Joint Statement issued during the U.S.-China Economic and Trade Meeting in Geneva on May 12, 2025, and subsequent meetings held in London on June 9-10 and in Stockholm on July 28-29, 2025, both parties are reminded of their pledges.

With the goal of fostering a more cooperative economic climate, the two nations have agreed to implement the following measures by August 12, 2025:

  1. The United States will adjust its approach to the additional ad valorem tariff on goods imported from China (including those from the Hong Kong and Macau Special Administrative Regions). Specifically, the U.S. plans to suspend 24 percentage points of this tariff for an additional 90 days, while maintaining a 10 percent tariff as stipulated in Executive Order 14257, effective April 2, 2025.
  2. In a reciprocal gesture, China will also modify the additional ad valorem tariff on U.S. goods as outlined in the Announcement of the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council No. 4 of 2025. This entails suspending 24 percentage points of the tariff for 90 days starting August 12, 2025, while keeping a 10 percent additional tariff intact. Furthermore, China commits to implementing necessary administrative measures to lift or suspend non-tariff barriers previously imposed on the U.S., in accordance with the Geneva Joint Statement.

This updated Joint Statement reflects the collaborative spirit of the recent U.S.-China Economic and Trade Meeting in Stockholm, which was conducted under the framework established by the Geneva Joint Statement. The Chinese delegation was led by Vice Premier He Lifeng, while the U.S. representatives included Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
