Shane Gillis made his return to “Saturday Night Live” as a host for the second time on March 1. Unlike his previous appearance, the show did not open with Gillis portraying President Trump; instead, James Austin Johnson took on that role in a cold open sketch depicting Trump vs. Zelenskyy.
Following the opening sketch, Gillis took the stage to deliver his own stand-up routine. He started by poking fun at both Trump and former President Biden before shifting gears to compare liberals to famous villains from the “Star Wars” universe.
Addressing the audience, Gillis humorously remarked, “You guys are pretty liberal here. Look, I understand being liberal, dude, it feels good. It’s powerful. It’s too powerful, dude. It’s like the Sith. You, like, lose yourself.”
Despite the lukewarm response from the crowd, Gillis continued with a joke about white men asking their girlfriends about their past partners. He touched on the awkwardness of inquiring about previous relationships with people of different races, acknowledging his own past experiences.
Towards the end of his monologue, the comedian shared his love for historical documentaries, specifically mentioning Ken Burns’ Civil War special. Gillis joked about the length of the documentary and how it can easily put women to sleep, humorously comparing it to a sedative.
This marked Gillis’ second time hosting “SNL,” with his debut taking place over a year ago in February 2024. The comedian’s return to the show comes five years after he was fired for making racist, homophobic, and misogynistic remarks in the past.
