In a recent episode of the “Daily Show,” host Jon Stewart called out Democratic figures for their contradictory actions surrounding President Donald Trump’s inauguration. Despite warning that Trump could become a fascist dictator, these same figures participated in all the typical inauguration customs, including President Joe Biden welcoming Trump to the White House for a traditional tea.
Stewart humorously remarked, “It’s always important to keep up the tea tradition when you hand over the keys to ― I’m sorry, what did you call him? ― Hitler! I’m not saying Biden should’ve done his own insurrection, but there’s gotta be a happy medium between storming the Capitol and ‘would you like a crumpet?'”
However, Stewart praised Michelle Obama for her consistent ethical stance of avoiding the ceremony altogether, stating, “Only Michelle Obama seemed to have the consistent ethical stance of saying, ‘When they go low, I stay the fuck home.’”
During Trump’s swearing-in ceremony, Stewart also pointed out a curious detail – Trump did not place his hand on either of the two Bibles held in front of him as he repeated the oath of office.
“Trump didn’t actually put his hand on the Bible,” Stewart quipped. “Obviously because one or the other would burst into flames. Perhaps both.”
While it is not required for a president to place their hand on a Bible during the oath, most presidents have done so. However, Trump chose not to.
