On the latest episode of “The Daily Show,” host Jon Stewart criticized Democratic lawmakers for ending the government shutdown without securing extended subsidies for the Affordable Care Act. This move, according to Stewart, was a significant betrayal of the primary issue that the Left has been fighting for during the 41-day shutdown.

Stewart expressed his frustration, pointing out that despite the recent election victories for Democrats, they ultimately caved in and voted alongside Republicans to reopen the government without addressing the healthcare subsidies. He highlighted the fact that instead of getting the extended subsidies they had been advocating for, Democrats only received a promise to vote on the issue at a later date.

In a clip from ABC 7, it was mentioned that Democrats had hoped to include the extension of subsidies for the Affordable Care Act in the deal to end the shutdown, but ultimately had to settle for a mere promise of a future vote on the matter.

The legislation to end the historic government shutdown was passed in the Senate, but it still needs to go through the House and receive approval from President Donald Trump. With a Republican majority in the House, the bill is expected to pass, and Trump is likely to sign it with full support from the Right.

Stewart’s scathing commentary on the situation highlighted the missed opportunity for Democrats to leverage their recent electoral successes and push for their policy priorities. The monologue serves as a reminder of the complexities and compromises involved in the political process, even in the face of significant momentum and public support.

Overall, the segment underscores the challenges and frustrations of navigating the political landscape, as well as the importance of holding lawmakers accountable for their actions and decisions.
