It was inevitable that Joni Ernstâs flippant dismissal of her constituents’ fears regarding potential Medicaid cuts would have political repercussions.
Senator Ernst appears to be banking on a full-throttle MAGA approach to secure her position, all while hoping that her comments wonât backfire.
One immediate consequence has emerged: state Rep. J.D. Scholten (D-IA) has declared his intention to challenge Ernst in the upcoming election.
According to the Des Moines Register:
In a conversation with the Des Moines Register, Scholten remarked that Ernst’s comments were “pretty instrumental for me.” He noted that he first heard her remarks while en route to a funeral.
“As I sat there, reflecting on life as one does at a funeral, I realized I needed to take action,” he explained. “And when she doubled down with her, what I found to be quite disrespectful comments, I thought, ‘Alright, letâs do this.’
Scholten gained recognition by running against former Rep. Steve King and is now serving his second term in the Iowa state House. He joins Nathan Sage, director of the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce, in the race for the 2026 Democratic Senate nomination in Iowa.
Up until this past weekend, Joni Ernst was considered relatively secure in her reelection bid. However, her recent shift towards a âdeath panelsâ MAGA stance may have changed the stakes.
Democrats would be prudent to rally behind a strong candidate to challenge Ernst. With Republicans potentially facing a midterm crisis in the House, they may find themselves scrambling to maintain control of the Senate.
Ernstâs seat, previously not a primary target for Democratic gains, now warrants serious consideration in light of her alarming weekend comments.
