Jordan Chiles, the Olympic gymnast who recently had her bronze medal stripped by the International Olympic Committee, opened up about the emotional toll of the controversy at the Forbes Power Women’s Summit in New York. The audience applauded as Chiles paused to gather her thoughts when asked about what she felt she lost due to the medal being revoked.

Chiles tearfully revealed that it wasn’t just about the medal for her, but rather about the recognition of who she was as a person beyond her sport. She expressed feeling stripped of her identity and pointed out that her skin color played a role in the events that unfolded. The controversy surrounding the reallocation of her bronze medal to Romania’s Ana Bărbosu left Chiles feeling unsupported and unheard during the appeal process.

During the floor exercise final at the Paris Games, Chiles initially finished fifth but moved up to third after a successful inquiry by her coach to raise her score. However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled the inquiry invalid due to a time technicality, causing Chiles to be dropped back to fifth and lose her medal. USA Gymnastics is currently appealing the decision to the Swiss Federal Tribunal.

Chiles emphasized that she and her coach followed all the rules and did everything right in the competition. Despite the setback, she remains determined to make history and continue her gymnastics journey. Chiles, who will be returning to UCLA for the upcoming college gymnastics season, received a bronze clock as a gift from Flavor Flav at the MTV Video Music Awards.

The entire ordeal has been emotionally taxing for Chiles, who has faced racially driven attacks on social media in addition to losing her medal. She spoke out against the unjust treatment she received and expressed gratitude for those who have supported her throughout the challenging time. Chiles’ resilience and determination to overcome adversity serve as an inspiration to many, and she remains focused on her future in gymnastics.
