Joseph Returns to the Runway with Sculptural Inspired Collection

After almost a decade since its last runway show, Joseph made a triumphant return with a new creative director, Mario Arena, at the helm. The brand, founded by Joseph Ettedgui, has undergone a period of rebuilding and restructuring under the leadership of CEO Barbara Campos. The company, known for its ready-to-wear collections in the 1970s and ’80s, faced challenges in recent years but has now reported a profit for the first time in years.

Arena, who has an impressive background working with top fashion houses like JW Anderson and Christopher Kane, drew inspiration from the art of sculpture for his debut collection at Joseph. He aimed to imbue softness and lightness into traditionally flat mediums, creating pieces with structural shapes, deep folds, and fluid movement.

The runway showcased a mix of structural and fluid designs. Standout pieces included a belted cape dress and a cashmere two-piece adorned with 3D printed metal quills. The collection also featured wide-leg trouser suits in satin twill, maxi skirts in denim, and silk and lamĂ© ensembles paired with fitted knits and python prints on alpaca shawls. Arena’s attention to detail was evident in the selection of footwear, with woven leather knee-high boots and python pumps complementing the looks.

While the collection excelled in its play with textures and silhouettes, some pieces like the see-through tops felt less cohesive. However, the cashmere and culottes trouser suits emerged as the stars of the show, offering a perfect blend of sophistication and modernity.

Joseph’s return to the runway signifies a new chapter for the brand, showcasing a blend of creativity and craftsmanship that promises to reinvigorate its presence in the fashion industry. With Mario Arena’s vision steering the brand towards a sculptural-inspired direction, Joseph is poised to reclaim its status as a leading ready-to-wear label.
