Judge Mary Kay Holthus Recounts Terrifying Attack in Court

The Las Vegas judge, Mary Kay Holthus, who was brutally attacked by a convicted felon during his sentencing hearing in January, bravely recounted the harrowing experience in court on Thursday. The attacker, Deobra Redden, pleaded guilty to attempted murder, bringing closure to the traumatic incident.

During the emotional hearing, Judge Holthus, visibly shaken, shared her fear of death as Redden lunged at her, causing chaos in the courtroom. She expressed gratitude towards the court officials who intervened swiftly, potentially saving her life from the violent assault.

Michael Lasso, a law clerk present during the attack, testified that he felt an overwhelming sense of helplessness as Redden tackled the judge and violently slammed her head against the floor. Lasso’s quick thinking and physical intervention played a crucial role in subduing the assailant and preventing further harm.

The courtroom footage captured Redden’s sudden and violent attack on Judge Holthus, showcasing the terrifying moment when chaos erupted. Following hours of questioning and testimonies, a plea deal was reached, signifying the end of a grueling trial that revisited the traumatic events of that fateful day.

Redden’s defense attorney revealed that his client suffered from schizophrenia and was off his medication during the assault. While considering an insanity defense, Redden ultimately pleaded guilty to the charges, acknowledging the severity of his actions.

Redden’s outburst, fueled by his untreated condition and personal grievances, led to a dangerous escalation that endangered Judge Holthus’ life. Despite the physical and emotional toll of the attack, Holthus displayed remarkable resilience and returned to her judicial duties after receiving medical treatment.
