Judge Cannon Keeps Classified Evidence Sealed in Trump Assassination Case

In a notable ruling on Friday, Judge Aileen Cannon determined that Ryan Routh, the individual accused of attempting to assassinate former President Trump, will not be granted access to classified evidence presented by the government in his case.

The classified materials were submitted to Judge Cannon and will remain sealed, as per her order. She stated, “The United States’ Motion and all accompanying material are hereby SEALED, and shall remain preserved in custody of the Classified Information Security Officer, in accordance with established court security procedures, to be made available to the appellate court in the event of an appeal,” according to her written statement.

While the exact nature of the classified evidence remains undisclosed, reports indicate that Routh was flagged by federal agents upon his return from a stint in Ukraine, although the Department of Homeland Security under President Biden failed to take further action at that time.

Background on Ryan Routh

Routh spent eight months in Ukraine, engaging in combat, before returning to the United States. His social media profiles were rife with pro-Ukrainian sentiment, and he was seen in a video alongside soldiers from the AZOV regiment.

According to Just The News, an interview with Customs and Border Protection noted, “Subject is a USC who had traveled to Kiev, Ukraine for 3 months to help recruit Soldiers from Afghanistan, Moldova, and Taiwan, to fight in the Ukrainian war against Russia.”

Routh claimed that his recruiting efforts were strictly voluntary and provided a business card detailing his connections with potential soldiers from various countries, asserting that he financed his trips through his wife.

Charges and Allegations

In a significant turn of events, federal prosecutors charged Routh with attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate after he reportedly aimed a rifle through the fence of Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course. He also faces two federal firearm-related charges: possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, both of which carry severe penalties.

Authorities discovered a makeshift sniper’s nest in the shrubbery bordering Trump’s golf course, where they found a GoPro camera, two backpacks, and a loaded SKS-style rifle among other items. One of the backpacks contained ceramic tiles believed to be intended for use as body armor.

Proceedings and Self-Representation

Routh has pleaded not guilty to the charges stemming from the assassination attempt. Remarkably, just last week, Judge Cannon ruled that he can represent himself at trial, although public defenders will remain on standby to assist as needed.
